Describing a typical life of a young adult would include a routine of things; partying, gossiping on Facebook and texting on their cell phones. In this day and age, it would be unheard of for a teen not to have a cell phone. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that there are over a billion text messages that are sent on any given day.

But when does texting become deadly?  It can happen in many ways, the most common, texting while operating a motor vehicle. So deadly in fact, that it kills over 100,000 people a year. This number is staggering, over something as simple as texting that can easily be prevented. I know what you’re thinking, that you can multitask and that this could never happen to you. But it can. The question that seems to be on everyone’s mind is, why? So I decided to find out for myself. I asked a few students what their take was and the answers may surprise you. This came from one male, “I like to fit more than one thing in my time I guess. I mean it’s easy, everyone does it” It seems that students who partake in this innocent activity don’t seem to grasp the grave consequences that can result when combined with driving. This came from a female, “I think it’s dangerous, {while driving} but I can’t help it sometimes, even though I know it’s wrong.”

Recently, U.S law makers have tried to curb texting while driving offenders by instituting strict punishments banning this activity, but only in certain states like California, New York, Nebraska, and Arkansas. Canada also has adopted these new laws, which includes Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador which have banned cell phones in cars. Just for a friendly reminder, I’ve taken it upon myself to give you tips on how you can stay safe and protect others around you!

Number 1#: If you get a call or text message while driving, ignore it. Turn the device off if you think you might be distracted.

Number 2#: If driving with a friend, let them be your personal secretary and give them the phone to text your messages.

Number 3#: Hide your phone in your purse, then put your purse in the back seat of your car out of reach, so you won’t be tempted to use it!

Number 4#: Lastly, don’t get a cell phone.* (*I know it may be extremely and unimaginably hard to do.)What have we learned today?

That texting and driving don’t mix and can result in serious penalties, which can include having your license taken away.

And it can cause serious accidents including death.

There you have it folks, texting is becoming a deadly epidemic everywhere only you have the power to stop it, that’s if you choose to so play safe and be responsible!
